Data Storage Media – A Guide to Selecting Media for storage and data backup
Data, or information stored on your computer may be held stationary on the hard drives inside the computer or on removable media such as CDs that can be inserted and removed. Removable media can be used to transfer files between computers or to save existing data on fixed readers disk. There are three types of removable media: magnetic, optical and flash.
Magnetic storage
Magnetic storage: Hard disks, discs and digital audio tapes are examples of magnetic storage. They work through a reading / writing, which creates and reads magnetic impressions disk.
The downward …
• The magnetic printing only lasts for about five years
• Capacity Most of the removable magnetic disks is too small for many types of files
Optical Storage
Optical storage contains information in digital form that is written and read by a laser. All CD and DVD players are examples.
The upside …
• Capacity building: an optical disc can store the same amount of data that over 500 diskettes
• Durability: they last up to seven times longer than the form of magnetic storage
Flash memory (Solid-State Removable Storage)
semiconductor memory (or memory Flash) storage device is a high performance plug-and-play device that contains no moving parts. It is found in digital cameras, game consoles and video digital audio players. You can use it as a USB key for transfer or data backup. Flash memory is small, light and fast.
Backup
The backup is copying files to a portable media so that if your computer crashes, data will not be lost in oblivion. Backup is usually routine in large companies but is often overlooked by individual users. Some suggest the backup data files and duplication of your hard drive every week. It takes about 45 minutes to backup a drive of 500 megabytes.
There are two backup options locally or online. The following is a list of options for local backup. Most of these also double as devices used to transfer data between computers.
• Diskettes
• Zip
• CD
• DVD's
• Flash Drive
Internet Backup
Another backup option is to send your files to a website for more security. If your computer crashes, you can simply download from the site. Examples of these sites:
Backup Defender www.backupdefender.co.nz
My backup-www.mybackup.co.nz

Floppy and Zip Drives
Diskette
A floppy disk is a 3.5-inch removable magnetic disk. The old version, the floppy is 5.25 inches square and flexible. Copying a floppy disk is fast and economical.
Ideal for …
• Those who use their PC for personal finance – the disk allows you to recover a balance checkbook, etc.
• Projects that must be saved continuously, like a movie script, because it is a cheap alternative.
Not so good for …
• Some newer models of computers and laptops that do not have a floppy disk or a floppy drive installed.
• Large quantities data than floppy disks do not have large storage capacity
Zip
A Zip drive is a small square-shaped magnetic disk which is ideal for backing up your PC. The size of 100 megabytes contains the equivalent of 70 floppies. They also come in a size of 250 MB
Ideal for …
• Duplication of your entire disk drive
• Archiving
• Storage of graphics or other large files
• Transfer large files
• Keeping data separate from certain files on your hard drive
The disadvantage …
• They seem to be a fleeting technology – most computers do not have a Zip drive installed disk and opinion varies on how long they will stay for.
Compact Disc
There are different standards of CDs that have different capabilities. Just for us confused, they are recognized by the seemingly similar acronyms, CD-R, CD-RW, CD + RW, DDCD and E-CD.
CD-R
CD-R (Compact Disc – Recordable) is a CD that can be recorded only once. It usually takes 74 minutes of audio or 650MB of data, even if newer versions contain Up to 80 minutes of audio (700 MB of data). If your PC has a CD-burning software and a compatible CD-R or CD-RW, CD-R can be used in the same way as a floppy disk. However, unlike a floppy disk can not be deleted or overwritten. Search CD-R which have an extra layer of protection that makes them less susceptible to damage from scratching.
Ideal for …
• Make CD music
• Storing pictures
• Permanent Data Storage
Not very good for …
• File transfer as they can be used only once
CD-RW/CD + RW
CD-RW (compact disc rewritable), CD + RW can be registered as many times as desired. Data can be lost permanently. Beyond that, the CD-RW is identical to CD-R. If it was not over for their durability CD-RW and CD + RWs can be reused continually.
Ideal for …
• File Transfer
• Data remand
Not so good for …
• Keep permanent records important-if they are deleted inadvertently
DD CD (DDCD)
This disc has a storage capacity far greater than an average CD-R or CD-RW.
Ideal to …
• Backup
• Data Storage archive
Enhanced CD
Enhanced CD (CD-E) is an audio CD with data CD-ROM added. Data CD-ROM is inserted in the space did not sound. Recording artists can use this to include videos, lyrics, interviews or promotional materials. The E-CD can be played on a CD, but to view additional content that you need to access a device compatible media such as CD-i, DVD-ROM or CD-ROM.
Bridge Records
A CD-Bridge provides additional information on one track CD-ROM XA. The disc can be read by a CD-i connected to a TV or a CD-ROM XA connected to a computer. Software such that photo or CD Karaoke Player can provide a lot of fun with the HDD Bridge.
DVD (Digital Versatile Disk): More movies
Although DVD's have become more associated with the video, they may also hold audio and computer data, hence the name Digital Versatile Disk. As CD, DVD a 120-mm by 1.2 mm thick disk. However, the DVD has more tracks than a CD holds a lot more data. CDs have a storage capacity of 750 MB invariable while the DVD stores 17GB.
A range of acronyms is also used to distinguish between different types and capacities of DVD available. These include DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD + RW and DVD-Audio.
DVD-ROM
DVD-ROM (Digital Versatile Disc – Read Only Memory) is similar to a DVD, but it is designed for computers. Stores DVD-ROM data in the same manner as the CD-ROM and are used in DVD-ROM drive PC.
The upside …
• Storage space more – contain more data than a CD
• Can be filled with almost everything from video data, music or a specific computer
• A basic speed of 1.32 MB / sec
The disadvantage …
• Many older computers do not have DVD-ROM drive installed
• can be recorded once
DVD-Audio
DVD-Audio (DVD-A) is designed for audio and high quality music. Its storage capacity is seven times that a CD and provides at least twice the sound quality. As Enhanced CD, DVD-A may contain other data, giving the listener information such as additional words or images. DVD-A is predicted by many to replace the standard audio CD in the music industry.
DVD-R
Such as CD-R, DVD-R (Digital Versatile Disc-Recordable) can be recorded on once.
The upside …
• DVD-R may contain an assortment of information, data, video, text, audio and computer
• DVD-R can be played on your video player Normal DVD, but remember, if you have additional data not in the same video and audio formats, such as all you'll need a DVD-ROM or a media player of some sort
• DVD-R is read at the same speed as the business makes DVDs
DVD-RW and DVD + RW
Similar the CD-RW, DVD-RW or DVD + RW (Digital Versatile Disc – Rewritable) can not be recorded, erased and rewritten several times. Other than that, they are identical to DVD-R.
DVD minus and plus are just different versions with the same functionality.
The Future of CD / DVD Storage
The majority of the technology industry predicted that soon the DVD, with their greater storage capacity and faster access replace CD's. DVD-ROM may be sold with new computer systems in the way CD-ROMs were once. However we are always on the verge of new technologies such as HD-ROM.
HD-ROM (High Density Read Only Memory)
HD-ROM uses a more accurate particle beam to write data. This allows information to be written on more durable materials like metal to that storage is almost constant. HD-ROM has hundreds of times the storage capacity of CD-ROM.
Flash drives
A Flash Player is a small stick portable memory that contains anywhere from 1Mb to 1GB of data. It is surprisingly light and is often worn around the neck or worn as a funky key chain. They are compatible with any PC that has a USB port and Mac OS 9 and OS X, Windows 2000 and XP or Linux 2.4.17.
The upside …
• Durable – longer than CD or DVD
• No need batteries or a separate power source
• Convenient – your computer should recognize the additional disk when you insert it into the USB port
• Ideal for backups
• Storage capacity larger and many other portable devices
• More portable than ZIP drives, CDs and diskettes
• Fast transfer rate (approx. 1Mb/sec)
• Edit, rewrite, delete as many times as desired
• Help desk staff can use flash drives a portable kit that includes updates and system recovery tools.
The downside …
• More expensive than other portable devices
• The Virus – The portability and compatibility of Flash Player increases the risk of spreading viruses. In many cases, the virus carried by a Flash player does not be detected as most antivirus software is reactive and only recognizes known viruses
• Theft – a Flash player, it can be easier for data to steal unlocked PC
• No security – the size and weight of the Flash player, it is very easy to misplace. Most security features and have little or no data are easily accessible. Some flash drives have built in security is a password or, in some cases, a fingerprint system – but at a price.
